Introducing DestroyTwitter 2.0
Finally. That’s all I can say after almost a year of on and off development, numerous rewrites, and a lengthy break. I have too much to say about DestroyTwitter 2.0, so I’m going to run through some of a big improvements and leave the rest to be discovered.
Complete Window Resizing
For those updating from 1.x, you could resize the window vertically and use ‘Wider Workspace’ mode to view three canvases at once. No more! If you want to go fullscreen, go for it. If you’re weird and want to show Mentions and half of Home, feel free. And if you resize the window to within 40px of a canvas’s edge, it’ll snap to that canvas.
More Accessible Settings
Instead of placing every setting and its grandma under Preferences, I decided to relocate a few. Now, if you want to change the refresh rate of a canvas, you can do it straight from the canvas. These menus also provide you with the hotkeys that match the function, so you no longer need to reference the documentation.
Composing tweets is where the settings relocation really shines. Instead of closing the drawer and heading to preferences just to change your URL shortener or image service, you can do so straight from the drawer itself.
The search history is also a context menu now with a dedicated item for clearing the history or the current search.
Preferences Galore
Though many of the settings have been moved, a ton still reside in the Preferences canvas. There are now three different font sizes for the older folk, icon sizes (including none), and a few tweetflow options.
Improved Filtering
Filters in 2.0 were known as ‘Rules’ in 1.x. Now, they have their own drawer that can be accessed straight from the canvas without heading to Preferences. You can filter users, keywords, AND sources. This means if you’re like me and hate check-in services like Foursquare and Gowalla, add them to the sources filter and boom goes the dynamite.
Easter Eggs
2.0 includes a number of goodies that aren’t exactly obvious at first. I plan to add documentation sooner than later, so you can check them all out. Two worth mentioning for now are multi-touch navigation and scrolling through unread tweets. The first only for devices that support gestures, like Macbook Pros. You can three-finger swipe from canvas to canvas. If you’re tired of scrolling through trying to find the next unread tweet, simply hold alt when arrowing up or down. It’ll select and scroll to the next unread tweet in that direction if one exists.
A Few Missing Features from 1.x
Many of you will notice a number of features that exist in 1.x, but didn’t make it to 2.0 (yet). The biggest two that are sure to affect a good number of people are Themes and Groups. Because of Twitter’s approaching deadline for the OAuth cutoff, I didn’t have the time needed to implement these and fully test them. Even though Twitter extended the deadline, I wanted to stick to my launch date. Themes will definitely be in 2.1 and Lists (formally Groups) will be in 2.2 or even earlier.
Since these features are pretty important to some users, I decided to change 2.0′s application ID, so if you want to continue using 1.7, you can. Installing 2.0 won’t overwrite 1.7. The unfortunate part of this is 1.7 won’t prompt for an update, however, you can run them side-by-side until the OAuth cutoff in August if you need multiple accounts.
There are billions of other improvements and changes, so be sure to explore a bit. Also, take note of memory usage. After a few solid weeks of testing, we’ve seen usage as low as 25mb. Not once have I seen it reach 70mb—and that’s after 24 hours of usage.
PLEASE READ
Now, this morning I had a number of issues with the destroytwitter.com domain, so it might still be propagating throughout the world. Also, make sure your address isn’t using the https URL. If it doesn’t load for you, you can download 2.0 here.
Enjoy it and if you have any feedback, bugs, or questions, hit up the new support site: http://support.destroytwitter.com

Bye bye TweetDeck! Hello DestroyTwitter!!
i’m proud of you! here’s to the version 3.0! > ^.^ <
very nice … i’m downloading …. very excited to try it …
Great job tho .. keep it up
Congratulations on a job well done. I know quite some people that had switched to tweetdeck just because DestroyTwitter’s development had stalled and those people are now comming back. Keep up the good work
I have enjoyed your Detroy Twitter since the first version was released and have never looked back. First look at the new version and WOW, love it even more. Thanks!!
Awesome! Thank you so much for all your hard work. DT has been my only Twitter client and I will use it until the day I die!
Where is the support Mobypicture?
THANK YOU for this great application!
LOVE IT!
Congrats on the release!
Using it for a while and it’s wonderful. I still don’t like the waste of space having fixed-height tweets, but overall it’s refreshing to see a new DT version out! THANKS!!
Awesome! Love DT2! Cant wait for 2.1 and 2.2. Thanks Johnnie! This is the best Twitter client ever! I’ll be donating soon..
Finally! I was so eager to see this! Too bad 2.0 doesn’t do lists yet, but I’m really loving it for now, and hoping lists will come live soon.
Johnnie, THANKS! DT was my client of choice for over a year, and I’m pretty much willing to enthrone it again.
Cool, I was looking forward to it, but there appears to be no proper Retweet support? We still don’t see others RTs, and the only way we can make them is text based, not using the proper Twitter system? That’s somewhat disappointing.
@Dave — 2.0 supports incoming native retweets, but not outgoing (yet). Probably in 2.1.
Awesome! Thanks !
@Jonnie – That is good enough for me then sir! I assume Twitters fail-whale and refusal to load my mentions is the reason for the missing RTs. Thank you for the reply.
yey awesome.
Disappointed to be honest. It has become more like tweetdeck and lost what I loved about v1.
My biggest problem – the space a tweet takes and the horizontal border between tweets.
#2 the whole window thing. I loed the fact that DT showed more tweets and consumed so much less screen space, in this one, well that’s not the case.
#3 the big blue bar that appears when I tweet.
#4 the ability to hide users is no more (which I assume you might add in subsequent update or not.)
I know you’ve spent time and effort on this, it’s just the wait and excitement for a new version got my hopes high and what I saw disappointed me.
Sorry.
Finally. Its great I never gave up on DestroyTwitter 1.7. Just knew that 2.0 would come out eventually.
Hi,
This update looks great. However, I’m missing the ‘Away’ button. Some news about that?
Playing with it right now, looking good!
Few initial thoughts:
– No multi-user support? I thought it was planned, right?
– App’s title bar is cropped in fullscreen mode (at least in Windows)
– That gray border between each tweet is a bit disturbing to me…
But keep up the good work, pretty and effective app!
Awesome. Feel priveleged to have beta tested this.
@Manan —
#1 – the fixed-height tweets save memory like woah. If I find a way to recycle variable heights, I’ll do it.
#2 – 2.0 adds 25px to the window…
#3 – that’s just a confirmation alert to let you know the tweet went through. I could certainly add a preference to hide it.
#4 – it still exists, but is now called filters. You can filter a user from their tweet’s menu or by selecting ‘configure filters’ from the canvas’s menu.
@Quentin — multiple accounts is coming soon, but OAuth deadline cut some features out. Can you post a screenshot of the Windows bug to the support site? You’ll be able to change the border with themes in 2.1.
@JoostF1 — Away is coming back soon.
@Johnnie.
a)I have a 1024×600 netbook with 2Gigs of RAM. I would trade 100MB of RAM for variable-height tweets. Believe me!
b) Also, please, can we hide columns. I do not know if it is possible to hide the “Search” column or not, but it is preventing the “Messages” column to show. ;_;
@Johnnie Thanks for the feedback!
I’ll post the screenshot.
Another thoughts: why not use an install badge? The ZIP solution might look odd to most users…
@Juan — Unfortunately, I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if memory usage was an extra 100mb. I plan to add the ability to reorder canvases, so that should fix your other suggestion.
@Quentin — In all honesty, I ran out of time to setup a badge. I will get to it later this week. Thanks for the reminder though
sorry.. it kind of feels like a step back from 1.7, it´s not so intuitive, the fixed height it’s a big drawback, the design doesnt feel as tight as 1.7 and i know that you wanted to make most of the options available all the time, but i think you sacrificed simplicity a little to much.
It´s still a great app.. it´s just that 1.7 it´s better.
I was starting to get a little tired of using other Twitter apps to bridge the gap between DT1 and DT2! Keep up the excellent work Jonnie!
Awesome! Thanks!
I prefer the system font because I use another language.
But, font configuration doesn’t work in the profile page.
Letters are broken and I cannot read them. Can you please fix it?
hey jonnie! i was looking forward the release of DT2 as much as iOS4, and now i downloaded it! this is the best twitter client i’ve ever used, and the best application i’ve ever seen on mac. thank you so much for doing an awesome job, such as a great interface and language problems.(Japanese!!) I will love all the stuffs you create from now, too. Keep it up!!
oh, one thing that you’re missing is compatibility for Japanese language on the profile page in the application. can you fix it?
Great work. Thank you.
Would love to be able to ‘pin’ searches as a column to keep across news as it happens, ala tweetdeck, but that aside, liking it!
Jonnie you did it!! DestroyTwitter just got better! It’s the best twitter client. Period. Thank you so much!
Great work, but how does url shortening work now? I would suppose that when I enter a Url (and have selected “Auto Shorten URLS”) the url will get shortened automatically. but this doesn’t work (Mac)
And there is no Url-Window to enter the to be shortened url manually…
@Konki — URLs will shorten when pasted if they’re greater than 25 chars long.
marvelous app… magnifique! Just got better than the 1.x..
just for the record: Did you optimized the memory footprint? how lighter the app are now? i’ve the sensation that its pretty faster…
I liked the three column view of DT 1.7 with Home, Mentions and Messages, but now it shows the search on the third place, its a bit annoying that I cant move the columns
Anyway, the new version has some good and quick new setting-tweaks, thank you
Love it! It’s my ever Twitter client since I use Twitter!
- Just one thing though. What about having tooltips in the buttons? I was wondering what a button was supposed to do and couldn’t figure it out without clicking it.
Oh…. And… When will you do an Android Flash Version?
Congrats!
I hope you can bring back the Home Replies Search Messages etc filters back. Its kinda messy with tweets from Home notification coming out instead of just Replies and Messages as I normally opt only for those 2. Anyway, great job with sound notification!
Thanks!
Thanks for all your hard work and the entire concept of Destroy Twitter. So many of us would still be looking for or dealing with mediocre Twitter clients. DT is awesome and nothing compares! Keep rockin’!
Congrats on a great release. I was a big fan of the first version of DT and even sent money to support its development since I found it to be an indispensable tool. After you announced the halting of development I did stick with DT for a while until some newer Twitter features didn’t work with it. I’ve been using TweetDeck, but version 2 of DT may just bring me back.
There is one feature that TweetDeck has that stops me from completely switching: previewing shortened URLS. Blindly clicking on shortened URLs without knowing where they lead is a big no no for me. Is there a chance this feature might make its way to DT?
Otherwise ver2 of DT is a great update to an already great application. You should be very proud of it. Thanks for releasing it for us to use and enjoy.
@Mark — Thanks! URL preview was actually a feature in 1.x as well, but didn’t make the deadline for 2.0. I will certainly add it though.
Excelent!
Great Version
but…and the “away” button?
in the old version, it’s a very usefull
Thanks!
lacks “away” button… and i whant “search” and “messages” change places…
great application! Thanks!
Oh man! So excited that my favorite twitter client has been updated. Thank you so much.
Destroy Twitter is so gentle – tweets appear gently, the whirling whirls gently, the colors are easy on the eye – a pleasure.
please add support of third api~~ = = i’m in china…………..gfw….so…….thx.
Also in China. DestroyTwitter works great with VPN.
Looking forward to the “offifical” retweet function. Thank you!
As always, some solid work. Nice job dude.
please..please bring back themes as soon as possible..this black theme is killing me.
Please add custom font function.
And API proxy function is also needed in China.
Thanks.
I can not sign
I have no 1.7.x version, I have the latest version of Adobe AIR, but I can not log on. I get this message: “401 Unauthorized: Failed to validate signature and token OAuth”
Please help me!
I forgot: To make matters worse, there are no problems with the username and password.
GREAT client. So lightweight, good looking, and performs wonderfully. Thank you!
Will donate when I get some extra funds available. Thanks for all the hardwork!
OK. Am I the only one who can’t find the Favorites portion? I can certainly favorite a post, but I can’t see my list of saved posts.
YES! love love.
Awwwww, I love it.
Thank you for coming back!
Would be very nice if you would add multiple accounts support
What’s happens with Groups??? I can’t live without it!!!
We need the symbols of hashtag, for example: #worldcup, #chi, etc.
My dream is a DestroyTwitter in French…
Will you add the possibility to accent characters?
Oh flippin’ heck! Finally! Thanks Johnnie.
wow… perfect timing. after uninstalling the old DT, i felt lost and confused having refused to use tweetdeck for its obnoxious interface.
thanks again, jonnie, for the best twitter client out there.
Just installed it today.. I know there was a lot of effort into this, but I’m definitely going back to 1.7 for now.
I like DT for it’s simplicity, for being compact, for being intuitive in it’s functions, and having easy to access functions. Now It seems it lost a bit of that..
Here’s why:
1) Fixed height on tweets. I know it’s for memory saving purposes, but damn, tweets take to much space for those (like me) who don’t use the application in fullscreen. With same window size as 1.7, I can see 4 tweets, where I used to be able to see 6. I also could live without those dividers.
2) No more save/retweet buttons. The menu thing makes it less intuitive and slower to get to.
3) Buttons that turned into symbols. It was so much more intuitive and easy before (not to mention a plus on the design, since there was no symbols in DT before).
4) “Clear” button on Search panel is now under a menu. I mean.. why? The History was so much better in the search bar (which is how it works on search engines, meaning people are more familiar with it).
5) No “People” panel. Where can I see someone’s (who hasn’t any tweets in my timeline lately) profile now? Do I really have to search for it, or for a tweet of that person?
6) No Away or Saved/Favorited panels (Ok, just to mention it’s really usefull, as I believe they’re coming back on a future update)
7) No Acount Panel
9) The Restore button.. What’s the point in going to a menu which only has that one function? Couldn’t we have a single button for it?
10) Why is the font smoothed? It hurts to look at it, like my whole screen is unfocused.
11) I am now unable to change the settings directory.
12) Unable to disable transitions. This one is not so much of a “don’t like”, is more of a “don’t understand” thing. If you were worried about memory consuption on variable tweet heights, weren’t worried about it on transitions? Otherwise, I don’t really care, since I use and like transitions.
Gladly, not all is bad. Here’s what I like:
1) Logout. If there used to be a button for this before, then I don’t remember where it is, if I ever found it at all.
2) API Calls are predifined. When I first got into Twitter, and started using DT, I had no idea what API calls were, neither what to do with that option. Using the new “Refresh Rate” option is way better.
3) Refresh option. Always wanted that.
4) New way of seeing someone’s profile. That new ‘overlay’ panel is way a better way than before, since we never have to leave the panel we’re in.
5) New retweet formats.
6) Ability to change fonts
7) The general way of changing options.
9) Finally a button to send a Direct Messege. No longer need to know someone’s username to send a DM.
10) Spell Check. It’s still only for English, but it’s a good step forward.
Sorry for the long post, but I think feedback is always good.
It’s good to see some progress on this great program, but as I said before, for now I’m sticking with 1.7 even if it prompts me for an update everytime I log-in.
Maybe with future versions I’ll update.
Cheers, and thanks for keeping this up.
I agree with TiagoFj “5) No “People” panel. Where can I see someone’s (who hasn’t any tweets in my timeline lately) profile now? Do I really have to search for it, or for a tweet of that person?. ”
I turn to use destroy 1.0. too bad.
