Two feet of snow and the Canon 50mm f/1.2L

Jen in the snow

Yesterday, Jen asked if we would still be able to go out today because of the snow forecast. I said, “I don’t see why not. It’s probably going to flurry.” Two feet of snow later, we decided to take the camera out for a walk. It was a lot colder than expected, so we didn’t stay out very long. At f/2.8 with my new 50mm f/1.2, I was able to snag a few beauties of Jen.

  1. Such an great combination of an awesome camera, an awesome objective and a beautiful woman :)

  2. Great photo, love it. If you had to choose between the 50mm f/1.2 vs a zoom… which way would you go and why?

  3. @Chris — I’m a sucker for primes. Since there aren’t any zoom below f/2.8, it’s hard to compare. I believe more in zooming with legs, but have a few zooms in my bag just in case. The 50mm f/1.2L’s sharpness is unparalleled, as most L primes are. Also, Canon only has a few zooms in that range (24-70, 24-105, 17-55). My dad has the 17-55 and it has a lot of shortcomings—soft, sub-par color/contrast, EF-S only. I’ve owned the 24-70 and wasn’t happy with the sharpness, so I sold it. I own the 24-105 now and it’s great, but is plagued with barrel distortion. Even at $1699, the 50mm f/1.2L is well worth it on fullframe. I don’t know if I’d go for it on EF-S, but in that case, there’s the 35mm f/1.4L.

  4. Love the 50mm f/1.2 from Canon, great prime lens. Honestly, the only one we’ve used on our 20D since we got it last year. My favorite lens by far.

  5. @Troy — Great to hear! The 20D, you say? Vintage :)
