Poll: Replies vs Mentions

In implementing Lists as a replacement for Groups, the navigation changes a bit. I’m wondering if I should finally give in to the official Twitter nomenclature and replace “Replies” with “Mentions.” There are pros and cons to both. “Replies” isn’t entirely correct since you can be mentioned in a tweet and it not be a response. “Mentions” institutes another eight-letter “M” word, which could be confusing at quick glance. “Replies” widens the gap between the two sides and “Mentions” makes it a bit even. What do you think? Comment your reasoning.
I like the evenness provided by using mentions. I don’t think it will be too confusing.
Could you make it customizable via the settings?
I prefer Mentions, feel like a bit more symmetry
Mentions is better because for example a RT would go into the “Replies” but it isn’t a reply, it’s a Mention
So yeah I can’t explain it, but I think Mentions is a better “name”
Probably best to just move to Mentions. I wouldn’t like having to check both replies and mentions separately. Stick them together as Mentions.
Also if you’re interested in integrating Twicli and letting people upload sets of photos or videos… and tag others into photos etc mail me at samstr@gmail.com
Lists will be great!
Mentions as it makes everything more symetrical!
Replies works better compositionally, but mentions makes more sense from a nomenclature standpoint.
Thanks for asking!
Personally, I never used “Saved” at all. Do others?
Mentions is more practical, and is the trend of other clients as well.
On an unrelated note, any plans on multi-account and/or using OAuth login as twitter will be deprecating username/password auth?
I don’t often use saved, possibly make it an option? Perhaps even move the ’save’ toggle to the sexy new context menu? (I’ve had save overlap the ‘in reply to’ arrows more than once)
I like mentions due to the duality of it. It can be a reply and or a mention!
Have to go with mentions as that’s what they are!
I don’t like the idea to remove groups. Why not just make that optional?
I actually use the Saved function quite often. It’s a great way for me to bookmark links I might want to revisit later without having to clutter up my browser bookmarks. After I’ve ready the article or visited the link I wanted to save, I simply delete that tweet from my saved list.
Well the thing is that groups were a client-side implementation of a feature that didn’t exist serverside. Now with lists, we have that serverside capability, granted, it doesn’t (yet) have keyword capabilities.
I’d go with mentions for sure, it’s more applicable.
Ideally the two would be separated, as replies (tweets beginning with username) are mostly more conversation based and mentions more like RTs and vias. That’s just my pref anyway.
mentions ftw!
Voted for Mentions.
mentions – as it means your @name is in the tweet. Either because someone wants to get your attention or you’ve been pointed at in relation to the tweet.
I don’t think “Mentions” and “Messages” will be confusing, but maybe it’s because I’m a DT(w) user already.
I prefer the official names, but since you’re using Saved instead of Favorites, Replies shouldn’t be a big deal.
@dipnlik — Good point about the Favorites/Saved. I think I’m okay with Saved over Favorites since Favorites crosses the line in terms of length and it’s just an ugly word…
I think Mentions is much more accurate given their typical use nowadays. Even for regular replies we see people adding a period in front of a user name to make it a public tweet.
What about Faves instead of Saved? Same basic word structure.
I think ’saved’ is just as fine as ‘favorites’. It just means the same.
Although I definitely think you should switch to ‘mentions’, because it’s more explaining. ‘Replies’ doesn’t cover the whole spectrum, just like you said.
Good that you’re considering it and that you share it with us via a poll! Keep on rocking.
I think Mentions is totally ok (for many of the reasons above), but I don’t know why Messages got moved over to the right side of the divider. Seems more appropriate where it was before. Then again, Messages and Mentions right next to each other is a little weird…
I think mentions does work with the symmetry, plus its correct.
i think if Twitter is going to call it “mentions”, you should follow to avoid confusion with new DT users, and better yet, new Twitter users.
